The Michelangelo Hotel in Sandton is well known for its exceptional, delectable high teas. The luxury and sophistication of these exclusive events goes without saying, however, it is the delicious dishes on offer that are the stars.

Gourmet fair is never in short supply at the Piccolo Mondo Restaurant and their fabulous high tea is no different. With so much to choose from, it may be difficult to settle on a favourite.

With tasty treats such as croque-en-bouche, crème brulee, sushi and a divine chocolate fountain, it can be difficult to decide where to start.

Tempting treats, such as a selection of expertly prepared sushi, could be the perfect kick off to your high tea. Start with the delicious savoury selection and then work your way towards the sweet treats.

The eye catching tower of choux pastry that makes up the croque-en-bouche is in itself awe inspiring. Spun with caramelised sugar, these tantalising pastries are guaranteed to delight. For chocolate lovers, there is of course, a chocolate fountain with a variety of different treats to dip and enjoy.

The star of these popular afternoon gatherings is, of course, the Michelangelo’s heavenly crème brulee. This delicious custard base dessert is a firm favourite and is said to date back as far as 1691. While it may have been around a rather long time, it only gained popularity in the 1980s, being viewed as the ultimate of indulgent treats to reflect the decade’s racy and ambitious character.

It has since become a signature dessert at the Michelangelo’s high tea. The crisp caramel topping is created using sugar that is fired with a chef’s torch, leaving the creamy custard filling smooth.
