2021, I accept your Challenge!
Let us not digest what has passed, especially after a year like 2020. Looking back and being reminded of the hardships, the fights, the challenges, the things we never thought we’d have to consider is redundant.
Each of us has had inimitable trials, we know what they are, we have stumbled, we have been tripped, we have bled. All I can say to you, take confidence in standing tall, in surviving this inexplicable year (even if you are only hanging on by your chipped and damaged fingernails), in “striving valiantly” in your arena and in owning your victory and defeat!
2021 holds a journey that is unknown, we have never had to navigate waters such as these, all we can do is look forward and step bravely into The Arena. There are no better words to share with you, as we turn our focuses to 2021 than, those of Theodore Roosevelt. His ‘Man in The Arena Speech’ was delivered in France in 1910 to inspire the people of the republic to not “judge a man merely by his success” but by his ability to fall, to fail and to continue on: “- courage and resolution—these are the qualities which mark a masterful people.”
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."
To my fellow Gladiators, I applaud you for all you have done to get to 2021 and I look forward to joining you in The Arena this new year, to stumble and triumph together.
Here are a few tips from the Gladiators at Legacy Balance to help you to wipe away the dust, blood, sweat and tears from 2020 and suit up for 2021.
Be the person who is “actually in The Arena”: add the practice of being fully present in each moment. This is the key to an extraordinary year. Whatever you are busy with, feel it and experience it with every cell in your body.
Add experiences rather than things. It is through trying and risking that we grow. We can feel the elation of triumph or “at worst” we might fail BUT be while “daring greatly”. Let’s not be “timid souls” but heed courage to discover ourselves through “victory” and “defeat”.
“Strive valiantly”: add courage and fearlessness. Add new questions about the meaning of your life. Add spiritual wisdom, discovery, and processes. Have the year of your dreams by adding movement and life to the places within your being that are outdated and stagnant.
“Know great enthusiasms”: add a realistic view of yourself and applaud your progress. Add compassion and understanding for those around you and save a dose for the most important person in your life, you! Add forgiveness and gentleness, add comfort. This could be a year of tremendous growth. Don’t be a critic in your life or the life of others, stop pointing out “how the strong man stumbles” and find places to stumble for yourself.
- Add music, add beautiful interactions with friends. Add flowers, add bubble baths, add romance… you get the picture! Add JOY!
